Tropical Storm Danny Forms in Atlantic

Tropical Storm Danny formed today in the Atlantic about 445 miles (716 kilometers) east of Nassau, the Bahamas, with maximum winds of about 45 miles per hour, according to the National Hurricane Center, reports Bloomberg.

The storm is moving west-northwest at about 18 mph and is forecast to drop as much as 4 inches of rain in the northwestern Bahamas. It is on a track to skirt the U.S. East Coast close to Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, and may hit Cape Cod in Massachusetts and the coast of Maine this weekend, according to NHC maps.

"There is a possibility of a landfall in the U.S.," said Eric Wilhelm, senior meteorologist at AccuWeather.com in State College, Pennsylvania. "In the near-term it will be a pretty slow mover."

Wilhelm said Danny, the fourth named system of the Atlantic season, will be at least a strong tropical storm when it passes New England. It may develop into a Category 1 hurricane with winds of 74 mph or more, he said.
