Kyrgyz President Elected

According to the Central Election Commission incumbent President Kurmanbek Bakiyev scored 89.7 percent of the poll counted in the Kyrgyz presidential election.

The results are based on returns from 710 of the 2,330 polling stations. A total of 652,265 ballots have been counted so far in the mountainous landlocked Central Asian nation, Xinhua reports.

The four other candidates in the presidential elections received 1.6% or less of the overall ballots.

Turnout in Thursday's election was at least 79.3%, although a final figure had not been announced. The vote was declared valid on Thursday afternoon when turnout passed the 50% threshold, RIA Novosti reports.

He was widely expected to win re-election, but the the landslide nature of the victory in a race that had been tightly contested by United People's Movement candidate Almazbek Atambayev is certain to spark further allegations of electoral fraud from the opposition.

The country's fractured opposition slammed the elections as "illegitimate" almost immediately after polls closed, but by evening they already appeared to be backing away from threats to paralyze the nation with street protests, AFP reports.

Late on Thursday, opposition supporters of Mr Atambayev gathered outside his campaign headquarters for a concert and to express their discontent with the election process.

Many said they witnessed widespread violations such as groups of so-called carousel voters moving from one polling station to another.

The crowd dispersed when leaders of the opposition reassured them that further actions would be taken in the coming days, BBC News reports.
