Doctors performed a successful quadruple bypass heart surgery over former Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien.
Dr. Michel Pellerin, who performed the surgery, said in the statement that Chretien is expected to have a full and complete recovery.
The 73-year-old Chretien, who led Liberal governments for a decade after taking power in 1993, was scheduled to speak at an Asia-Pacific mining conference in Vancouver on Tuesday. Organizers said he canceled at the last minute after feeling sick.
Chretien stepped down as prime minister and Liberal leader in 2003 amid infighting with eventual successor Paul Martin.
"I was heartened to hear of former Prime Minister Jean Chretien's excellent prognosis following his heart bypass surgery today," current Liberal leader Stepane Dion said in a statement.
