Israel: Weeping Western Wall

The Western Wall (also called the Wailing Wall) of Jerusalem is weeping, an event described as “highly unusual” by some and as “the coming of the Messiah” by others, while pragmatists call on the Israeli water authority to check its pipes.

Built by Herod the Great in 20 BC, the Great temple was destroyed in AD 70 by the Romans and only its western wall remains, this also being known as the Wailing Wall.

Last Saturday, water began to trickle from between the stones and left a damp patch, which has intrigued religious elders. Rabbi Shmuel Rabinovitch has declared that “maybe the wall is indeed crying because of the current situation in the country”, while rabbi Menachem Fromann was of the opinion that “There is a prophecy that everyone knows, which states that when water comes through the stones of the wall, it presages the advent of the Messiah”.

Rabbi Levi Lau, of the Hartman Institute in Jerusalem, declared that “Instead of looking for a spiritual explanation it would be better to ask the Israeli water authority”.
