After Russia's 2:3 defeat to Belgium in the World Cup, the coaching staff of the Russian team, including Oleg Romantsyev, Mikhail Gershkovich, and Sergey Pavlov handed in their resignations. As a result of their being routed in a deciding match, the team didn't go through to the last sixteen, and lost their chance to take further part in the tournament.
Before the World Cup began, team trainer Oleg Romantsyev promised to resign in the event of Russia not progressing past the group stage.
