The study was published in the last edition of the Lancet. Based on a 6-year study of 5,395 people over 55 years of age, the team of scientists concluded that there is a clear association between the level of alcohol consumed and the degree and risk of senile dementia.
They claim that the fact that alcohol dilutes the blood and reduces cholesterol could help to limit the onset of the disease, which appears to be exacerbated by vascular deficiency.
The team declared that there did not appear to be any difference caused by the type of beverage consumed, beer and distilled drinks appearing to be as effective as wine, but the rate of consumption, three times a day, was recommended.
When in future your doctor tells you to reduce your alcohol intake or to stop drinking, change your doctor.
