Yevgeny Kafelnikov failed to qualify for a semi-final of a major tennis tournament in the capital of Qatar, Doha, with prize money of one million dollars. The Russian player, seeded as No.1 lost to Reiner Schutler from Germany (No.7) in the quarter-final 5-7, 4-6. Along with the German, Moroccan Yunes al-Aynaui, Czech Bogdan Ulirah and Spaniard Felix Mantilla will play in the semi-finals. At the same time Russian women tennis players are participating in tournaments in Australia and New Zealand. Tatyana Panova is the most successful so far, having become a finalist of a tournament in Auckland (New Zealand) with prize money of 140,000 dollars. She beat Sylvia Talaja from Croatia 6-3, 6-2 in the semi-final. Anna Kournikova who could have met with Panova in the final if she had won lost to Anna Smashnova from Israel 1-6, 4-6.
