Indian Men Rewarded with Bikes for Becoming Sterile

The Indian government decided to take very unusual measures in order to inspire Indian men to have a surgery that would make them sterile. As it was announced, every man, who would agree to make himself sterile, would be awarded with a $30-worth bike.

Twenty-four operated men have already been rewarded with bikes in the Bankura region, which is 160 kilometers far from Calcutta. A spokesman for the regional administration stated that such a surgery was very unpopular last winter. That is why, the authorities set forth an attractive idea to give away bikes to those, who agree to become sterile. As the Indian government hopes, not less than 250 men will check out of hospitals and ride their bicycles home this winter. Bihari Mahato (35), the father of four children, said that a bike was a very good present for him. He said that he was happy to throw out his old bicycle that his father gave him 40 years ago.

The number of Indian population exceeds a billion people. This number is increased by 20 million every year. Scientists believe that if the country does not learn to control the national birth rate, as China learned to do it, the majority of the Indian people will always live below the poverty line.
