Belarus's Modern Art in Moscow's Tretyakov Gallery

The National Tretyakov Gallery is exhibiting modern Belarus' artists. Thursday will see the opening of the exhibition of the "Nemiga-17" creative association, a group of Minsk's leading plastic arts masters.

The association members, artists determining a main line in development of the Belarussian art, have brought 70 works created in the last decade to the Russian capital.

"Nemiga" masters "are inclined towards form abstraction", though do not lose strong touch with the reality. Each in his own way they experiment with plasticity of pictorial or sculpture forms developing their own sign system.

The "Nemiga-17" creative association was founded in 1986 by a group of Belarussian painters and sculptors who set a task to renovate the language of fine arts. These artists with their mature manner and well-recognized style are famous both in Belarus and other countries. The association members tend to focus on expressiveness and symbolism of the color. "Nemiga" has brought interest to an expressive form rich in shades and a metaphoric language.

The name of the group is also symbolic, as Nemiga is the name of the street in Minsk where the studio that gave the idea to set up an association is situated. The development of "Nemiga-17" fell on the first perestroika years, when artists of all former Soviet republics faced the problem of national and cultural identity.
