On Friday the press service of the Russian embassy to Lithuania reported that after the reconstruction the military cemetery and a monument to Soviet soldiers and officers who died during the Second World War would be inaugurated in the Lithuanian city of Pagegiai at the border with the Kaliningrad region (the Russian enclave on the coast of the Baltic sea).
The official ceremony will be attended by the Russian Consul General in Klaipeda, war veterans, including the ones from the city of Sovetsk in the Kaliningrad region, representatives of local authorities and public.
More than 1,500 soldiers and officers of the 16th Lithuanian division, including 6 Heroes of the Soviet Union, are buried in Pagegiai. This is the 11th burial ground of Soviet servicemen opened this year after reconstruction in the territory of Lithuania.
For several years the Russian embassy together with local authorities has been engaged in restoration of cemeteries, memorials and monuments to Soviet warriors who died in the struggle against Hitlerite Germany. This year similar works are planned to be carried out in other Lithuanian cities and regions.
