The parents of "balloon boy" Falcon Heene have agreed to pay more than $36,000 in restitution stemming from a hoax in which they claimed their son floated away in a UFO-shaped balloon.
On Tuesday, Larimer County Chief Judge Stephen Schapanski accepted an agreement between prosecutors and Richard and Mayumi Heene, who were not present. Authorities initially had sought up to $48,000, according The Denver Post.
Richard and Mayumi Heene reported that their six-year-old son had floated away in a balloon. Police responded to the incident, which turned out to be a hoax. Both parents served time in jail for the hoax, News 10NBC says.
