'Star Trek's' Actor LeVar Burton Involved in Car Crash

Los Angeles police say actor LeVar Burton was involved in a five-car accident but wasn't seriously injured.

Detective Judy Acosta says Burton's 2006 Mercedes was on Beverly Boulevard in West Los Angeles at about 7:40 p.m. Monday when a 74-year-old woman in a 2006 Scion turned left in front of him.

Acosta says the cars collided. Burton's vehicle then hit a parked car, leading to a chain reaction that damaged two other parked cars.

Acosta says both drivers complained of pain, then were examined at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and released. Nobody was ticketed, The Associated Press reports.

Burton, 52, whose TV acting has included roles on such programs as Roots and Star Trek: The Next Generation and who served as the longtime host of Reading Rainbow, was driving his 2006 Mercedes eastbound along Beverly Boulevard at about 7:40 p.m. Monday when a 74-year-old woman driving westbound turned left in front of him, says LAPD Officer Tenesha Dobine.

The wreck caused a five-car pileup, although no one was seriously injured, Dobine tells PEOPLE. However, Burton complained of neck pain and was treated at a nearby hospital and released, she added.

Burton, who was born to a military couple at a U.S. Army hospital in West Germany, spent his childhood in Sacramento, Calif. He first made it big in Hollywood at the age of 19 with the role of Kunta Kinte, an 18th-century African tribesman kidnapped into slavery, in the 1977 TV miniseries “Roots.” He also hosted the popular PBS children’s series “Reading Rainbow” for over 20 years, beginning in 1983, HollywoodToday.
