On Saturday the Month of European Culture begins in St.Petersburg. On the decision of the Culture Ministers' Council of the European Union, the programme will be carried out in St.Petersburg on the occasion of its 300th birthday.
The programme will reflect different areas of St.Petersburg's cooperation with such international institutions and organizations as the European Union, the Council of Europe and UNESCO, the city administration said.
One of the key events of the programme will be a festival of the European Theatrical Union, which opens in the Maly Drama Theater on September 27. Organized by the largest organization in Europe, the European Theatre Union, the festival will for the first time be held in Russia.
In addition, an international festival of novel technologies in modern art and a philosophic-culturological congress will take place under the UNESCO aegis and an international festival of professional theatres for children and adolescents, sponsored by the Nordic Council of Ministers, will be held in schools.
During the Month of European Culture a square on the Vasilyevsky Ostrov in St.Petersburg will be named Square of Europe on the initiative of Walter Schwimmer, Secretary General of the Council of Europe.
The Month of European Culture will go on until November 2.
