Photo exhibition "150 Years of Spanish Photography" in Moscow

The exhibition "150 Years of Spanish Photography" opened on Friday in Moscow in the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts and in the Cervantes Institute. It displays photographs depicting people, nature and architecture.

The visitors to the exhibition will have a chance to see the photographs which for a long time were kept in the Spanish museums' depositories and in private collections.

Not long ago the Cervantes Museum organised a mobile exhibition which will visit twenty-five countries by September 2004. The chosen cities include Rome, Madrid Warsaw and also Moscow, reported the Moscow branch of the Cervantes Institute. The exhibition which displays some sixty photographs from state and private collections shows not only the development of photography in Spain but also the history of the country as a whole. The experts divide the Spanish art of photography in three periods: 1839-1900, 1900-1939 and from 1939 to the end of the 20th century.

The oldest photograph of a family by Locheron dates back to 1850. At that time mostly portraits were made, and only later landscapes appeared. The first photographers in Spain were often foreigners.
