The construction of Pyotr Fomenko's Theatre will soon be launched in Moscow (Pyotr Fomenko is one of the most famous Russian theatre directors). Moscow Mayor Yury Luzhkov said as much at a meeting with Russian prominent theatre figures on Monday. According to the mayor, there is a project of the theatre construction, and all the necessary documents have been signed and the site chosen: the theatre will be seated on a high bank of the Moskva river.
Presently, Pyotr Fomenko and his studio are confined to a fitted-out facility.
In addition, Luzhkov said, to construct a theatre for Vyacheslav Polunin, one of the world's most popular clowns, "will be the next task." "Now there are 83 theatres in the capital, while theatrical groups are much more numerous," the mayor stressed adding that "a beautiful theatre, New Opera," the Meyerhold Theatre and the Music House had lately been built in Moscow. "We are happy that the number of theatre performances has grown 50-100% and that theatrical groups have been given freedom to create and are now boasting a brilliant intellectual potential," Luzhkov said.
The mayor sees the task facing the Moscow authorities "in supporting and developing cultural life." At the same time, he acknowledged that it was not always possible to achieve this in the desired volume.
