Events were held in Austria on Monday to commemorate liberation of the Mauthausen concentration camp by the Allies on May 5th, 1945.
A special session of the country's National Council (parliament) was dedicated to the memory of those prisoners who died in the "camp of death" on the banks of the Danube and the victims of Nazism.
Austrian boys and girls released 80,000 balloons into the air, one for each of the victims of Nazism in Austria, in particular, the brutally tortured Lieutenant-General of the Soviet Army Dmitri Karbyshev. A monument to him now stands at the gates of the former concentration camp.
