The central city library in Basra, Southern Iraq, has burned down. It caught fire early in the morning, the Saudi Arabian SPA new agency reported. The library that contained a lot of valuable ancient manuscripts and historical documents is now lying in ashes. The firemen could not extinguish the fire, as the city had not had water for three weeks.
Crowds of citizens for several hours watched the fire destroy thousands of books and manuscripts collected for Basra's 14-century history, SPA pointed out.
