Russian Far East marks VJ Day

The Russian Far East, as well as neighbouring Chinese cities, are marking VJ (Victory Over Japan) Day September 3. Japan's Kwantung (Kanto) army surrendered completely September 3, 1945, thus ending the Second World War.

A large delegation of the Far Eastern military district's veterans and district HQ representatives laid flowers at the eternal fire of the glory memorial here today. This war memorial's pylons list the names of more than 47,000 Khabarovsk-territory residents, who died fighting Nazi and Japanese forces.

Moreover, veterans and public representatives laid their flowers at the monuments of Marshal of the Soviet Union Rodion Malinovsky, Fleet Admiral Nikolai Kuznetsov, a WWII-vintage tank and some others.

Wreaths are being laid and moments of silence organised in Komsomolsk-on-Amur, Nikolayevsk-on-Amur and other Far Eastern cities.

Representatives of veteran organisations of Russian border guards and those of the Heilongjiang provincial border-control service jointly laid wreaths at obelisks in memory of Soviet officers and soldiers, who died, while liberating Heihe city.

Russian and Chinese border guards also laid wreaths at Soviet war graves in Fuyuan and Tunjian.
