The legislative council, which includes heads of all Russia's regional legislative assemblies, suggested that the Russian Cabinet must take immediate measures to support the agrarian sector of Russian economy.
The recommendations adopted by the council at the end of the meeting on the food safety, will be sent to the Cabinet. The meeting of the council headed by Russian Federation Council Speaker Sergei Mironov, was held on Tuesday.
In particular, the council of legislators recommends that the Cabinet should limit the amount of food imports for state purposes until the unified federal law on agrarian policy is adopted. As the participants of the meeting pointed out, at present Russia's imports over 30 percent of most essential foods.
In addition, the council recommended that the Cabinet strengthen its regulation and support for the agrarian sector, introduce a new system of agricultural insurance, establish limitations on the bankruptcy procedures against effective owners of agricultural businesses, and take measures to improve social conditions of Russian agrarians.
The legislators expressed their deep concern over the present situation in the agrarian sector. At the end of the meeting, Sergei Mironov told journalists that Russia's food safety issue "is not just pressing, but has become urgent."
