Russian forward of the New York Rangers club of NHL Alexei Kovalev will participate in the 12th Open Golf Championship of Russia. This tournament has an amateur status and will be held on the courses of Le Meredien Moscow Country Club at Nakhabino near Moscow.
As president of the Golf Association of Russia Konstantin Kozhevnikov said at the press conference devoted to the start of the tournament, well-known Russian golf players and the national women's team, for which this tournament will be a qualification stage of the Golf Championship of Europe in Denmark, would compete in the championship of Russia.
About 20 foreign golf players from European countries have confirmed their participation in the tournament. Representatives of Spain, Great Britain, Germany and Austria will compete with the Russian entrants in the championship.
A sister of King Carl XVI Gustav of Sweden, Princess Brigitta, will attend the competition at Nakhabino specially for holding a charity tournament within the championship of Russia. "All the money collected as a result of this event will be spent on assistance to homeless children," Kozhevnikov said.
