Prosecutor's Office of Russia to insist on extradition of Chechen militants by Georgia

The Prosecutor-General's Office of Russia will insist on extradition of the detained Chechen militants, who are now in Georgia, Deputy Prosecutor-General of Russia Sergei Fridinsky stated at the press conference held in Rostov-on-Don (the south of Russia) on Monday. He also expressed hope that the Prosecutor-General's Office of Georgia would "bring the decision, taken by it, to the end".

The Prosecutor-General's Office of Georgia decided to extradite the detained Chechens, but on May 16th the Supreme Court annulled this decision. Russia charges the Chechens with having committed a number of grave crimes on its territory.

According to Fridinsky, it is difficult now to foretell the outcome of the story of the court hearings, since "confrontation between the Prosecutor's Office and the court has lasted for long enough".

However, in Fridinsky's opinion, there exists a second option, when the militants will be prosecuted in Georgia itself.

Russia will insist on such course of the situation development, if the court of Georgia orders to keep the detained persons, suspected of participating in the bandit formations, on its territory, the Deputy Prosecutor-General of Russia concluded.
