Russia and EU Support UN Key Role in Resolving Acute International Problems

A key role in meeting new threats and challenges as well as resolving the most acute international problems must belong to the UN and the UN Security Council, Secretary of the Russian Security Council, Vladimir Rushailo, and Secretary General of the UN Security Council, Javier Solana, stressed at a meeting in Moscow on Wednesday.

They exchanged opinions regarding the situations in Iraq and the Middle East in general, in Afghanistan, the Balkans and on the Korean peninsular. According to the Russian Security Council, the parties firmly supported resolving crises with the help of international institutions and in compliance with the international law.

The Secretaries also discussed the most urgent issues of international and regional security as well as separate areas of further partnership development between Russia and the European Union. First of all, they touched upon forming of a common European law-enforcement area as well as antiterrorist and anti-drug co-operation.
