Pyotr Svidler From Russia Won 4th Anatoly Karpov International Chess Tournament

Pyotr Svidler from Russia won top honours in the 4th Anatoly Karpov international chess tournament which ended the day before at Poikovsky settlement of the Nefteyugansky district of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Area (KhMAA) in Western Siberia.

As RIA Novosti was told in the press service of the administration of the Nefteyugansky district, the heat of passions abated on the last day of the tournament. Almost all the games between famous Grandmasters - Veskovi and Bologan, Pelletier and Lputyan, Zvyagintsev and Onishchuk, Lotier and Svidler ended in draws. Only Rublevsky and Obodchuk diversified the last round: by winning the game the former took third place.

Immediately following the end of the last game the tournament was a formal closing certmony was held, and the results of the ten days of chess battles were summed up.

Pyotr Svidler from Russia and Frenchman Joel Lotier, who scored six points, became the favourites of the tournament but the Russian won top honours due to the coefficient of the World Chess Federation (FIDE).

Vadim Zvyagintsev finished fourth with 5.5 points, followed by winner of the tournament of 2002 Alexander Onishchuk (5 points), Giovanni Vescovi (4.5), Viorel Bologan (4), Yannick Pelletier (3.5), Smbat Lputyan (3) and Andrei Obodchuk (2 points).
