On Tuesday, prosecutors searched the offices of the Russian bank Guta Bank and the Gosinkor state investment company in connection with the alleged theft of 300 metric tons (330 tons) of state silver, the press service of the Prosecutor General's Office said. It said the search was part of an investigation into the alleged theft of 300 metric tons (330 tons) of silver entrusted to Gosinkor by the government in 1996.
Guta Bank denied any violations on its part in the silver sale. Gosinkor is in the process of being disbanded in line with a February decree of President Vladimir Putin, the Russia Journal reported.
