Rosoboronexport and SSTL sign contract for launching 8 micro satellites

The Russian state company Rosoboronexport and the British company Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd. (SSTL) have signed a contract for launching eight micro satellites from the Russian space center Plesetsk by means of Kosmos missiles in 2002-2004.

The Rosoboronexport Press Service reported that the micro satellites to be launched would form an international group of satellites to monitor natural disasters Disaster Monitoring Constellation (DMC).

Seven countries of Europe, Asia and Africa are participating in this project. The Kosmos rockets are made by the Polyot company (Omsk). A Kosmos rocket has earlier been used for launching a British satellite SNAP-1 and a Chinese micro satellite Tsinghua-1 in June 2000.
