Russian Security Council discussed Kaliningrad problem

The inter-departmental working commission of the Russian Security Council discussed the situation in the Kaliningrad region (former Eastern Prussia, now - Russia's enclave on the Baltic Sea) in connection with the EU expansion. Deputy Security Council Secretary Oleg Chernov presided at the meeting.

The commission focused on the importance of full observation of Russia's interests in the Baltic region, first of all, the legal rights of Russian citizens on free movement within the country. (When Poland and Lithuania join the Schengen zone in 2003, the Kaliningrad region will be isolated from the rest of the country.) The commission considered several issues on the fulfilment of decisions, taken at the meeting of the Russian Security Council, which was held under President Vladimir Putin's chairmanship a year ago and focused on Kaliningrad problems.
