Mosenergo's net profit was 1.024bn rubles (about $32.8m) in the period from January to May 2002 compared to 3.645bn rubles (about $117m) in the corresponding period last year, Vitaly Kuzmin, deputy general director of the energy company, declared at a press conference today. He stressed that the decrease in profits was due to not high enough electrical and heating tariffs.
As it was earlier reported on June 26, 2002 the Federal Energy Commission rejected Mosenergo's proposal on a 22 percent increase in tariffs effective July 1, 2002. However the Federal Commission recommended the Moscow Energy Commission to consider possible increase in electrical tariffs due to the coming 15 percent advance in gas prices effective July 1, 2002. Moreover 2.3bn rubles ($70.2m) that Mosenergo spent on investment programs should also be taken into account. According to Kuzmin, this sum amounts to some 6.6bn rubles (about $210m).
