A small Canadian town of Kananaskis that was attractive for the abundance of bears on its outskirts is becoming the center of the world politics: the G8 summit is opening in the town today.
The summit will last for two days, and the main issue that is going to be discussed at it is the issue of the anti-terrorist struggle. The USA initiated the discussion of this question, of course. The Canadian government is ready to spend not less than $300 million on security for the participants of the summit, there will be about 40 pursuit planes to protect the Kananaskis resort from above.
Another relevant issue on the agenda is the discussion of the perspectives for the development of economic links, especially within the scope of the World Trade Organization, which is very actual for Russia, because our country is taking a lot of efforts in order to join this organization.
Anyway, the state of economic links is actual for other countries that are included in the Group of Eight. The recent scandal with America’s decision to raise steel tariffs is a good example to prove it. The presence of the EU Commission President Romano Prodi and Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar was not incidental in this respect.
There is another global issue - the development of Africa, one day of the summit will be devoted to this question. The Group of Eight took on the obligation to assist in the development of the African economy.
There is a huge time difference between Moscow and Kananaskis, so the main events will happen there, when Moscow is asleep. That is why we will offer you our comments tomorrow.
