157,000 tons of Pacific salmon to be caught in Russian Far East in 2002

In 2002 fishermen of the Russian Far East can catch 157,000 tons of Pacific salmon. Such a catching quota was set by the Russian government proceeding from research data. The Pacific research centre of fish economy and oceanography informed RIA Novosti that Far Eastern fishermen were allowed to catch over 115,000 tons of sickle, 30,000 tons of Siberian salmon and over 10,000 tons of red salmon. Fishermen of Sakhalin and Kuriles will receive almost half of the aggregate quota. Scientists predict the major approaches of salmon at the eastern coast of Sakhalin, where 13,000 tons is planned to be caught without damaging nature, while 31,000 tons of salmon are expected to be caught in South Kuriles waters. The first approaches of sickle are expected in the western coast of Sakhalin in the second half of May.
