Unknown terrorists, who put several hand-made bombs in mailboxes in Iowa and Illinois on Friday, showed up again yesterday. This time, they were operating in Nebraska. Since the majority of the American population lives in separate houses, the country has mailboxes all over the place; they look like tin cans on poles. The country is gripped with panic, and common Americans realize that the state is unable to protect them from terrorists like Bin Laden and the like. The bitter enlightenment against the background of unconvincing actions of the USA in Afghanistan and in the Middle East will be a serious test for the Bush administration. The people’s love cannot last forever, as it has to be constantly nourished with something, otherwise it will be exhausted very quickly.
A poll that was conducted by the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan showed that some 50% of Americans did not feel more protected from terrorist attacks than before the events of September 11. Those people who like to watch news programs are more concerned about this: experts say that official warnings about possible terrorist acts only intensify anxiety in society. Seven out of ten Americans are ready to give up at least some of their rights for the sake of more personal security. So what reasons can Mr. Bush find now in order to calm his citizens down?
