The figures released on Thursday by a leading consulting firm paint a depressing picture for the US economy, with jobless figures reaching their lowest point since 1994, standing at 140,000 new unemployed every month.
In April, redundancies showed a ten per cent increase, involving 112,649 workposts lost, this being the sixteenth month in the last seventeen that over 100,000 people have lost their jobs in the country, according to consulting firm Challenger, Gray and Christmas.
A total of 556,000 people have lost their jobs in the United States since January 2002. John Challenger, the President of the prestigious consulting group, stated that “The situation is better than September and October 2001, when the number of redundancies was 250,000 per month but even so, the average for this year is 140,000 per month”.
The three most affected sectors are telecommunications, the automobile industry and services, with the transforming industry also showing signs of fragility.
