Today, the Russian President Vladimir Putin had a meeting with Viktor Chernomirdin, who had been recently appointed the Ambassador of Russian Federation The final decision about this appointment will be taken after the confirmation by the State Duma. At this meeting the president and the newly appointed ambassador discussed the prospects of further cooperation between Russia and Ukraine. There are some deputies in the Duma who are not only surprised by the choice of Putin, but even unsatisfied by the new appointment. In his interview with PRAVDA.Ru correspondent Natalia Lein, Anatoliy Chekhoyev, Vice-President of the Committee for CIS Affairs expressed hope that Chernomirdin, as a specialist on the field of fuel industry, will settle the conflict concerning the Ukrainian debts for gas. Though whether the interests of “Gasprom” (it is well known that Mr Chernomirdin has some relation to this organisation) will concern Russian interests – that is the question… Nowadays, Chekhoyev supposes that the situation in Ukraine is very complicated, therefore the Russian Ambassador to this country must have a very adjusted policy. And we know about Chernomirdin, that he took part in the allotment of Black Sea Navy and has a very definite position of the status of the City of Sevastopol. Therefore, Russia is close to collapse in the relations with Ukarine, the deputy said.
