Uzbekistan will this year commemorate victims of Stalinist repressions. From now on Stalinist Repressions Day, established by a decree of President Islam Karimov of Uzbekistan, will be annually marked on August 31. "We cannot delete either from history or from the memory of this and the next generations the fact that millions of guiltless citizens were killed and many families were destroyed leaving a lot of children orphaned in the totalitarian regime period," the decree reads. On August 31 commemorative events will be held in the Tashkent memorial complex and a museum in memory of the victims of repressions is to be created by that day. The republic's public and charitable funds, the ministry of culture and the Academy of Sciences have been summoned to elaborate a programme of commemorative-education events to mark the day.
