Seven thousand gathered for a Left rally in European Square, the city's central. Mayday brought together Communists and activists of the Peasant Party, the Justice alliance and the Ukrainian Workers' League. Speakers called for an union of Ukraine, Belarus and Russia. No bourgeois regime will get Ukraine out of a lasting economic crisis and give people-in-the-street decent and dignified life. Socialism is to revive, and power to go over to "workers and peasants", said Communist leader Petr Simonenko. The newly-established Workers' and Peasants' Communist Party demonstrated along central streets to demand the Soviet Union restored. The demonstration finished with a rally in front of the Lenin monument.
