Alexander Khloponin, director general of the RAO Norilsk Nickel metals combine has won the gubernatorial elections in Russia’s northernmost Taimyr Autonomous District. Preliminary data show that he has scored more votes than his contender Gennadi Nedelin, the incumbent governor of the region. The votes at 32 out of 34 polling stations have been counted already, according to the Interfax news agency. Mr. Khloponin is 36 years old and he is set to become one of the youngest governors in Russia.
