Nikolai Kharitonov, leader of the Agroindustrial deputy group in the State Duma (parliament's lower chamber), made a proposal to instruct the Duma security committee to turn to Russia's foreign ministry for explanations of the circumstances of Pavel Borodin's arrest in the United States. Pavel Borodin, state secretary of Russia-Belarus union-state, was detained in the US on instructions from the Swiss Prosecutor's Office in connection with the investigation of the Mabetex case (he was in charge of the president's business administration when the Mabetex company was carrying out restoration works in the Kremlin), RIA Novosti announces. Addressing the State Duma session, Nikolai Kharitonov noted that "this level of 'hospitality' on the part of the United States is unacceptable - a high-ranking official is invited for the US president's inauguration and then is detained by the US police." Kharitonov also pointed out that Borodin is detained in the USA, allegedly for corruption while "the Russian president has just set free an American spy."
