After high-profile scandal: International conference on illegal immigration in Australia

Australia hosts this week an international conference on illegal immigration. Government officials, police officers and experts from around the globe convened here to share their experiences and discuss ways of combating people smuggling. While most details of the discussion remain confidential, the local media published some interesting data. A British delegate was quoted as saying 5 to 8 million people live currently in the European Union without necessary visas. The number of illegal arrivals to Australia intercepted last year exceeded 6000. Countries contributing large numbers of boat people to Australia include Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran and China.
