60,000 children in Guatemala suffer from acute malnutrition, according to statistics released by the World Food Programme.
6,000 of these children are considered to be in a critical condition, with doctors reserving the prognosis as to their state of health.
The severe drought which has affected the country since last summer destroyed a substantial part of the crops, which have not been replanted. This means an ongoing situation is expected for the 1.5 million people directly affected.
126 children have already died of malnutrition.
