Iraqi President Saddam Hussein has declared that the United States of America is responsible for the deaths of one and a half million Iraqis.
Writing to an American citizen who sympathised with Iraq, in a letter postmarked “Baghdad, Shabban 2, 1422 H, October 18.2001”, quoted by Spanish daily El País, Saddam Hussein said that he was sorry about what had happened on September 11th in the USA but that he could not express these words publicly because the USA was directly responsible for the death of many Iraqis.
“Until the USA expresses its condolences for the death of one and a half million Iraqis” there will be no public message of condolences from Baghdad to Washington, Saddam Hussein wrote in his letter to Christopher Love, a US citizen who sympathises with the position of Baghdad, this letter being quoted by the Iraqi Information Ministry.
The Iraqi president replied to Christopher Love, who had offered his services as mediator between the governments of Iraq and the USA, claiming that the US and British military aeroplanes continued to kill Iraqi citizens ten years after the no-fly zones were imposed over northern and southern Iraq.
