Brazil: Foot and Mouth disease halts meat exports

13 million head of cattle vaccinated and 1,118 slaughtered was not enough to halt the outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease spreading through one of Brazil’s prime cattle-raising areas, Rio Grande do Sul.

A team of veterinary surgeons from the European Union will inspect the State of Rio Grande on 21st to 25th October to assess whether the EU ban, imposed in May, can be lifted.

The Brazilian agriculture ministry has estimated at 300 million USD the damage caused by Foot and Mouth Disease to the Brazilian beef industry.
