Russian President Vladimir Putin has congratulated academician Valery Shumakov on his 70th birthday, commending him on his outstanding achievements in the sphere of health care. Putin emphasised in his telegram of congratulations to the academician Shumakov, director of the scientific research institute of transplantology and artificial organs, that his academic and practical developments "had changed all customary notions of the capabilities of modern surgery." Shumakov was awarded with the order of Apostle Andrew for outstanding achievements in the fields of health care and medical science. Shumakov was born on November 9, 1931. He was the first Russian surgeon to transplant heart, liver, pancreas, and other organs. According to Russian media, Shumakov has conducted over 90 heart transplants. The latest Shumakov's discoveries make it possible to create new techniques of separated vital organs' long conservation and restoration of their functions for further transplantation.
