The President of the 18th International Film Festival for Children and Young People, Armen Medvedev, announced on Thursday that the event would run in Moscow from 17th to 22nd December. The festival is in its 34th year. It started as part of the Moscow International Film Festival, but became an independent event in 1987. Medvedev reported that more than 30 applications to take part in the festival had already been received from France, Germany, Denmark, Singapore, Sweden, China, Spain, Poland, Japan and other countries. Ten pictures will be selected from these to make up the competition programme. The festival's jury will feature not only figures from the world of cinema, but also diplomats and journalists, as well as educational activists. Russia will be represented in the competition programme by Leonid Nechayev's new film "The Cricket behind the Fireplace".
