Australia: Bush Fires

A most welcome rain extinguished a number of bush fires overninght. Up to 30mm of rain made the difference in the Blue Mountains regin west of Sydney, provoking scenes of jubilation among the weary firefighting crews. While some fires continue burning, the mood has tangibly changed. A gigantic Russian Antonov cargo plane landed in Sydney on Sunday, bringing two big firefighting helicopters from the United States. Both machines will be used for water bombing fire outbreaks in New South Wales later this week. 26 people were arrested and charged with arson in relation to the current bush fires in Australia.
