Afghanistan: Bonn agreement criticised by warlords

Warlord Abdul Rashid Dostum has declared that he will not collaborate with the interim government and that he will boycott its decisions. General Dostum is one of the most influential warlords within the Northern Alliance and controls the area around Mazar-i-Sharif.

His position has been taken up by other Northern Alliance warlords who complain that their movement has not been given enough influence in the new administration. Dostum stated: “We announce our boycott of this government and will not go to Kabul until there is a proper government in place”.

The new administration respects the ethnic composition of the country.11 of the 30 members of the government are Pashtun, the ethnic group which makes up 45% of the population of Afghanistan. 8 members are Tajikh, which represent 30%, 5 are Hazara (10%), three are Uzbekhs (5%) and 3 from other smaller ethnic groups.
