The capital of the Kaliningrad Region has received grants worth USD 55 thousand from the international organisations World Emergency Relief and World Humanitarian Relief.
The mayor's press office told Rosbalt that the money would be used for targeted projects developed by experts from the mayor's office's department for the family and humanitarian aid. In particular, they are planned to be used to develop the municipal centre for social help and its offices around the town. The money will also go towards a soup kitchen, and supporting orphanages in the town.
The heads of the charities, Joel MacCollam, Yuri Gremyachev and his wife Shirley, who all live in Canada, are the main providers of social help in Kaliningrad. 80% of humanitarian donations come from the US and Canada. Over the last five years they have actively supported orphanages and shelters for children, which they always visit when in Kaliningrad. The organisers also control expenditure and study the needs of the town's social welfare institutions.
