Australia: We Are at War

After receiving a second phone call from George W. Bush, Prime Minister John Howard officially committed Australian troops to the US-led assault on Iraq. The emergency meeting of the Cabinet was brief and a mere formality.

In a way similar to the American approach, the Prime Minister addressed the nation in a televised speech.

The Australian Parliament re-convened later in the day, welcoming Mr. Howard with a barrage of criticism coming from the opposition benches and the public gallery. The parliamentary debate, now rather theoretical, is expected to take three days.
