4 dead in storm which spills oil slick across Algerian coast
24 people have died in the storms which have swept across Algeria. Heavy winds and torrential rains have left large areas flooded and have caused an oil tanker to sink, spilling thousands of tonnes of cauline and crude.
The “Cougard”, flying a St. Vincent flag, has run aground 70 km. from Algiers. Having left Spain for Croatia, the vessel lost its steering in the mountainous seas.
The “Cougard” was carrying 4,000 tonnes of Cauline and 250,000 tonnes of fuel oil.
