US congressman says USA needs Russian oil

The USA will cooperate with Russia in the energy sector, Curt Weldon, a representative of the US Congress declared at a press conference in Moscow. He pointed out that it concerned projects on exploring gas and oil fields in Sakhalin, Western Siberia and the construction of a Western-Siberia-Murmansk oil pipeline, which will enable Russia to export oil to the USA. We will work with such companies as LUKoil, Rosneft, Gazprom and Itera, the congressman declared. At the same time he did not specify the volume of US oil imports from Russia, saying that it would depend on the US market's demand and Russia's possibility to increase oil production.

Weldon said that the US and Russian parliamentarians would sign a resolution on increasing energy, trade and economic cooperation between the two countries in the next two months.

Weldon noted that oil production in Alaska would not satisfy the USA demand for energy resources. That is why the USA needs Russian oil to decrease dependence on supplies from the Middle East.
