On Friday, State Duma deputies confirmed their address to Cuban leader Fidel Castro in connection with the 40th anniversary of the Caribbean crisis. The Russian parliamentarians are thankful to Castro "for courage, which he displayed, when taking the historic decision of 1962, and the firm standpoint in the international scene," the document says.
The USSR and Cuban joint actions during the Caribbean crisis became "a brilliant foreign policy operation, which made the USA and its allies more sensibly appraise the alignment of forces in the international scene after World War II," the deputies noted.
"The USSR was regarded as one of two superpowers for the first time since its formation," the document says. The State Duma wished "success and prosperity to heroic people of Cuba."
