The ceremonial opening of a new international automobile crossing point on the Finnish-Russian border will take place on September 27. The Salla crossing point is located on the Alakurtta road in the Murmansk Region.
Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov and Finnish President Paavo Lipponen will take part in the opening ceremony. After its opening, Salla will allow up to 200 cars across the border each day.
EUR 6 million have been spent on constructing the crossing. The money was provided by the EU as part of its Cross-Border Cooperation programme.
Prior to the official opening, the Arctic Regional Section of the Federal Border Service will grant one-off permits for cars to cross the border.
